OSTEOPATHIC PRINCIPLES + STRUCTURAL DIAGNOSIS
YEAR 1-2 | PAGE 19A - OPP FOUNDATIONS, PALPATION + REGIONAL DIAGNOSIS
BUILD THE OSTEOPATHIC EXAM BEFORE THE TECHNIQUE
Use a repeatable diagnostic chain: HISTORY/RED FLAGS -> OBSERVATION -> TART/TISSUE TEXTURE -> REGIONAL ROM -> SEGMENTAL MOTION -> SOMATIC DYSFUNCTION -> INDICATION/CONTRAINDICATION -> TREATMENT PLAN -> REASSESSMENT. Lab skill comes from supervised hands-on practice; video builds the mental model.
A. DEEP OPP / STRUCTURAL-DIAGNOSIS VIDEOS - DIRECT & PLAYABLE
| # | Video | Time | Why | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | OMM/COMLEX Review Course - Fundamentals - Dirty Medicine | foundation | Osteopathic principles, somatic dysfunction, direct vs indirect approaches and the high-yield framework used throughout the OMM course. | |
| 2. | Spinal Range of Motion - Dirty Medicine | diagnosis | Regional flexion/extension, rotation and sidebending mechanics; a practical bridge from anatomy into structural diagnosis. | |
| 3. | Layer by Layer Palpation - Dirty Medicine | palpation | Palpatory examination from superficial to deeper tissues; practice describing texture, asymmetry, restriction and tenderness rather than simply naming landmarks. | |
| 4. | Cervical Spine - Dirty Medicine OMM/COMLEX Review | cervical | OA/AA/cervical segmental mechanics, diagnosis and treatment setup patterns in a board-oriented regional framework. | |
| 5. | Thoracic Spine - Dirty Medicine OMM/COMLEX Review | thoracic | Type I vs Type II mechanics, Fryette principles and thoracic diagnosis/treatment logic that transfer directly to lab practicals and COMLEX. | |
| 6. | Special / Diagnostic Tests - Dirty Medicine OMM/COMLEX Review | exam review | High-yield musculoskeletal and osteopathic special tests; use to connect structural findings to clinical differential diagnosis. |
A. DEEP OPP / STRUCTURAL-DIAGNOSIS VIDEOS - DIRECT & PLAYABLE — STRUCTURAL-DIAGNOSIS CLOSED-BOOK CHECK
- Perform and verbalize a basic structural screen from memory; distinguish observation, palpation, active/passive ROM and segmental motion testing.
- For a named spinal diagnosis, state the position of ease and restrictive barrier; do not guess treatment setup from memorized hand positions.
- Separate somatic dysfunction from red-flag pathology: neurologic deficit, fracture, infection, malignancy, instability and vascular concern change the plan.
- Document region + diagnosis + relevant findings, then reassess after any supervised treatment rather than assuming correction. VIDEO-FIRST | SCHOOL-EXAM + BOARD-EXAM MASTERY
