STEP 2 / LEVEL 2 STUDY SYSTEM
YEAR 4 | PAGE 35B - LONGITUDINAL -> DEDICATED -> MIXED MANAGEMENT
The strongest transition is not “finish clerkships, then start Step 2.” Each clerkship is a system block. Dedicated should compress and integrate knowledge already built through patient care, shelf/COMAT questions and error-driven remediation. C. THREE-PHASE STUDY ARCHITECTURE
| Phase | Execution | Exit condition |
|---|---|---|
| During clerkships | Finish most shelf-aligned UWorld/AMBOSS questions; convert patients into illness scripts; complete NBME CSMS or COMAT-SE where applicable; keep a one-page error taxonomy. | Can solve specialty questions by next-step logic, not just recognize diagnoses. |
| Transition / baseline | Switch to mixed questions; take a cumulative readiness assessment; rank weaknesses by frequency x severity x reversibility. | You know the 3-5 domains actually limiting performance. |
| Dedicated | Mixed timed blocks + targeted repair + periodic official assessment. Increase endurance while reducing repeat errors. Keep OPP/OMM active for Level 2. | Performance is stable across systems and management sequences under time pressure. |
D. DAILY DEDICATED LOOP
- Timed mixed questions: simulate the decision environment. Mark guessed and low-confidence corrects, not only incorrects.
- Deep review: for each miss identify whether the failure was recognition, discriminator, next-test sequence, treatment sequence, medication safety, prevention/disposition, ethics/safety or timing.
- Targeted repair: one focused source for the precise gap; do not restart an entire subject because of one missed mechanism.
- Retrieval: close the notes and reproduce the rule/algorithm from memory. Then solve a new question testing the same decision.
- Spiral: every day include material from prior rotations so “fixed” weaknesses stay fixed.

E. QUESTION-REVIEW ALGORITHM — F. RESOURCE STACK - MINIMAL, NOT MAXIMAL
- Primary question bank: UWorld Step 2 CK or equivalent; AMBOSS is strong for targeted repair/reference. DO students add a COMLEX-formatted bank such as TrueLearn when needed for osteopathic framing.
- Content: one concise clinical framework plus targeted long-form videos only for actual gaps. High-value examples include Doctor High Yield specialty reviews and Divine Intervention-style integrative review.
- Official calibration: NBME CCSSA for Step 2; COMSAE Phase 2 for COMLEX-oriented readiness; school-specific tools where required.
