REMEDIATION ALGORITHMS
YEAR 2 | PAGE 56C - ERROR-TYPE -> REPAIR TOOL -> DELAYED RETEST -> RETURN TO MIXED TRANSFER
E. ONE ERROR, ONE MATCHED ALGORITHM
| Failure mode | Repair algorithm | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge / forgotten fact Mechanism | Retrieve what you know -> fill only the missing facts -> compress to a cue/table -> immediate targeted item. Draw normal model -> perturb one variable -> predict downstream changes -> explain the clinical finding/drug effect. | New item after delay; then mixed block. Novel perturbation, graph or “what changes next?” item. |
| Differential / distractor Image / graph / lab table | Name top 2-3 choices -> write decisive discriminator -> state why strongest distractor fails. Describe objectively -> identify axes/structure/pattern -> translate to mechanism -> answer. | Look-alike vignette with changed clue. New representation of same concept. |
| Timing / rumination Ethics / communication | Lead-in first -> identify task -> eliminate contradictions -> commit at checkpoint -> move. Name principle + sequence: assess capacity/safety -> clarify values -> communicate -> escalate appropriately. | Timed official-like segments with post-block time review. New scenario; explain why tempting distractor violates sequence/principle. |
| Fatigue / endurance | Progressively lengthen realistic timed work; rehearse breaks, nutrition/hydration and recovery. | Late-session accuracy and pacing stay stable. |
7. Correct-but-slow and guessed-correct answers are latent weaknesses DEEP EXPLANATION A correct option can hide unstable reasoning, incomplete discrimination or excessive time cost. These items should be sampled in review because a small vignette change may flip the result. WHY STUDENTS MISS IT Most analytics classify them as correct, so they disappear from the remediation queue. EASIEST CLUE If you could not reproduce the reasoning quickly and confidently, treat it as fragile. — 8. The error type should choose the remediation tool DEEP EXPLANATION Knowledge gaps need retrieval; mechanism gaps need causal reconstruction; discrimination gaps need comparisons; representation gaps need format-specific practice; timing gaps need timed execution. One
universal study technique wastes time.
WHY STUDENTS MISS IT Learners often default to their favorite resource regardless of the actual failure. EASIEST CLUE Name the error before opening the resource. — F. 48-72 HOUR RETEST + RECURRENCE RULE
- After repair, use a new prompt rather than the exact item. Exact-item recognition can overstate learning.
- Retest after a delay, then again inside a mixed block. A repair that works only in a focused set is incomplete.
- If the concept fails again, ask whether the missing piece is upstream (e.g., physiology before pathology, anatomy before localization, receptor signaling before pharmacology).
- Promote a topic out of the active weak list only after it survives new-item transfer; continue light spaced maintenance.
G. REMEDIATION STOP RULES
| Stop / continue question | Continue repair when... | Stop broad review when... |
|---|---|---|
| Can I reconstruct it? Can I discriminate it? | Key causal links still require notes. Closest mimic still wins on a variant. | You can reproduce the mechanism unaided. You can state the decisive clue and distractor contradiction. |
| Can I transfer it? Is it still recurring? | Only targeted/familiar items work. The same error type appears repeatedly. | New mixed items and alternate representations are stable. The topic leaves the recurring-error list and only needs maintenance. 2026/27 Step 1 readiness expanded edition - verify current USMLE/NBME and school guidance before testing |
