THREE-LAYER REVIEW - DECISION PRACTICE
ALL YEARS | PAGE 41D - 10 HIGH-DISCRIMINATION CASES + MASTERY GATE
THE TEST IS NOT "DO I KNOW THE THREE LAYERS?" THE TEST IS WHETHER YOU CAN CHOOSE THE RIGHT LAYER AND INTERVENTION WHEN PERFORMANCE DATA CONFLICT. I. 10 HIGH-DISCRIMINATION CASES
| # | Scenario | Best review move |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A locally emphasized anatomy structure is on Friday's practical but rarely appears on your board Qbank. | Layer 1 now: master the school requirement; keep only proportional later maintenance. |
| 2 | You can explain renal physiology immediately after a video but cannot reconstruct it the next morning. | Retrieval/retention problem: closed-book reconstruction + spaced re-test, not another full video. |
| 3 | Current endocrine block is strong, but cardiology from two months ago disappears in mixed questions. | Layer 2 failed: restore a weekly prior-block spiral; do not restart endocrine. |
| 4 | You know the diagnosis but keep choosing confirmatory tests when the vignette already provides enough evidence to treat. | Reasoning/sequence repair: build task ladder and practice next-step questions. |
| 5 | You finish the Qbank but many correct answers were low-confidence guesses. | Not done: review unstable corrects; completion volume is not mastery evidence. |
| 6 | A school test rewards detailed lab methodology that is not central to the national exam. | Learn it for Layer 1; compress or drop later unless it supports broader mechanism. |
| 7 | After first learning, you score well in blocked acid-base sets but poorly when acid-base is mixed with respiratory and renal cases. | Interleave: the remaining gap is strategy selection/discrimination. |
| 8 | You miss a pathology image despite knowing the disease facts. | Representation gap: image/practical exposure + verbal feature discrimination, not broad disease rereading. |
| 9 | Official assessment improves, but the error log still shows repeated management-sequence mistakes. | Layer 3 is incomplete: repair repeated sequence errors and re-test on new items. |
| 10 | You want to add a second full review course because progress feels slow, although recent data show only two recurring weak domains. | Do not expand the stack: target the two weak domains with one defined repair resource each. |
J. THREE-LAYER DECISION RULE
| Question | If YES | If NO |
|---|---|---|
| Is the task required by the current school block/rotation? | Layer 1 gets immediate priority. | Move to retention/board relevance. |
| Was the concept once learned but is now inaccessible? | Layer 2: spaced retrieval + new-item re-test. | Diagnose knowledge vs reasoning vs representation. |
| Is the goal a national exam or cumulative standardized assessment? | Layer 3: blueprint + mixed timed practice + official calibration. | Keep the intervention local and specific. |
| Did the same error recur after repair? | Escalate targeted repair and re-test. | Return to normal maintenance cadence. |
J. THREE-LAYER DECISION RULE — K. MASTERY GATE
- Can identify the active layer before selecting a resource or study method.
- Can retrieve first, diagnose the failure, choose a targeted repair, and re-test on new material after delay.
- Can keep current school objectives, cumulative retention and national-exam transfer active without giving all three equal time every day.
- Can distinguish knowledge, reasoning, sequence, representation and timing problems and choose different interventions for each.
- Can show shrinking repeat errors, preserved older knowledge, stable timed performance and readiness evidence appropriate to the next assessment.
