CLINICAL SKILLS I + PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
YEAR 1 | PAGE 18A - HISTORY + PHYSICAL EXAM CONCEPT MASTERY
CLINICAL REASONING STARTS WITH DATA GATHERING
Use a repeatable encounter sequence: OPEN + AGENDA -> HPI -> PAST/MEDS/ALLERGIES -> FAMILY/SOCIAL -> ROS -> VITALS/GENERAL SURVEY -> FOCUSED EXAM -> SUMMARY. Learn why each question or maneuver changes the differential, not just the checklist.
A. HISTORY + PHYSICAL EXAM VIDEOS - DIRECT & PLAYABLE
| # | Video | Time | Why | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | The Medical H and P (Part 1 of 2) - Strong Medicine | ~20 min | Format, organization and content of the medical history and physical, including how the written H&P differs from the oral presentation. | |
| 2. | Respiratory History Taking - Geeky Medics | ~17 min | Patient-centered opening, symptom characterization, systems review, medications, exposures, social history and closure in an OSCE-style encounter. | |
| 3. | Introduction to the Stanford Medicine 25 - Stanford Medicine | bedside framework | Why bedside examination matters and how deliberate observation, palpation, percussion and auscultation complement tests and imaging. | |
| 4. | Cardiovascular Examination - Geeky Medics | focused exam | Structured OSCE cardiovascular exam: pulses, JVP, precordium, auscultation, edema and verbal synthesis of findings. | |
| 5. | Respiratory Examination - Geeky Medics | focused exam | Inspection, expansion, percussion, auscultation and common abnormal sounds organized as a reproducible station sequence. | |
| 6. | Upper Limb Neurological Examination - Geeky Medics | focused exam | Tone, power, reflexes, sensation and coordination; use to practice both technique and concise reporting of normal/abnormal findings. |
A. HISTORY + PHYSICAL EXAM VIDEOS - DIRECT & PLAYABLE — CORE CLINICAL-SKILLS CLOSED-BOOK CHECK
- Run a complete interview from memory while remaining conversational; summarize back to the patient before closing.
- For every exam maneuver, state the purpose, expected normal finding and one abnormal finding that would change your differential.
- Separate comprehensive from focused encounters: the clinical question determines how much history and examination is needed.
- Practice on real people/standardized patients under supervision; videos teach sequence and technique but cannot establish competence. VIDEO-FIRST | SCHOOL-EXAM + BOARD-EXAM MASTERY
