Integrative Capstone
Day 1 - Pick an imaging or sensing use case; write measurable requirements for field, resolution, wavelength, F/#, detector and environment. Day 2 - Create the paraxial/ray model; choose lens architecture, stops and detector. Calculate diffraction limit and first-order image scale. Day 3 - Model aberrations and MTF/OTF; add tolerances, alignment sensitivities and a basic radiometry/SNR budget. Day 4 - Implement or reproduce the design in OpticStudio (or equivalent); test defocus, misalignment and one realistic manufacturing/thermal perturbation. Day 5 - Produce a verification matrix, plots/screenshots, risk register, failure analysis and redesign recommendation.
Evidence Standard
- Evidence, not claims: linked calculations
- ray/wave model
- MTF or resolution evidence
- detector/radiometry assumptions
- tolerance/alignment sensitivity
- simulation screenshots or plots
- one failure/edge case
- explicit tradeoffs
- verification criteria
- final design review
